Grave Marking for William Richardson

President Steve Bennett and Vice President Ken Dilmore recently attended a Grave Marking for PVT William "Rowdy" Richardson at the Fought Cemetery in Paulding County. Many thanks to our District Chairman, Dave Lupien for organizing this event.

William Richardson was born the son of Irish immigrant parents in Montgomery County, Virginia and grew up during the exciting times of the Indian Wars and the American Revolution. He was called a boy soldier because he was only 17 years old when he served as a scout and soldier in the Indian border wars of western Virginia and Pennsylvania. He later served two years on the skirmish line in the Revolutionary War.

Richardson also fought in the War of 1812 from September 20, 1812 to January 10, 1813 with General William Henry Harrison, serving in the company of Captain John Fleming. William was also double first cousins with "Mad Dog" Anthony Wayne, in that their mothers were sisters and their fathers were brothers. It has been said that the two men spent some time together during the Revolutionary War. According to family tradition he died at the very old age of 108 while trying to break a colt.
