About Us
Based in northwest Ohio, we are a local chapter of the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. We are a lineage society and non-partisan group where each member can trace his family tree back to an ancestor who supported the cause of American Independence during the years 1774-1783.
Our chapter is named for John Hancock, Governor of Massachusetts and President of the Continental Congress at the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Hancock is best known for his large flamboyant signature heading the list of other signers of the Declaration. The term "John Hancock" has become a synonym in the United States for one's signature.
The John Hancock Chapter meets in Findlay, Ohio, and draws its members from Hancock, Hardin, Lucas, Putnam, Seneca, Wood, and Wyandot counties. Our chapter was chartered on June 2, 1990 as Chapter #28 of the Ohio Society.
We promote the study of American history, the US Constitution and the values, ideals and traditions outlined in our founding documents. As the decendents of American patriots, regardless of our political persuasion, we believe in the principles articulated in the US Constitution, the freedoms cited in the Bill of Rights, the value of American citizenship.
As members of one of our nation's oldest linage societies, we celebrate the diversity of America and the rich and colorful family histories that make us who we are today.
Our Patriots
The following men are individuals who supported the cause of liberty more than 200 years ago. Our chapter members proudly call these men their ancestors. Each member has at least one patriot ancestor who they have proven lineage to for membership, or proven as secondary supplemental applications in the case that a member has multiple ancestors who fought for our free and independent nation. Here is a brief biography of those men who make us "Sons of the American Revolution".
About the Sons of the American Revolution
We are a brotherhood of adult and youth males united by lineage connections to the Patriots that sacrificed their lives and fortunes to give us the United States of America. Descent from those Patriots bears a responsibility to reverently honor their lives and sacrifices. The SAR provides us with opportunities to share our passions and interests in our communities, our states, and the nation. Just as our Patriot ancestors worked together to overcome obstacles and achieve high levels of success, we work united to achieve common goals.
We value a love of God, country, and family above all else, while we also value our members and encourage growth of the chapters' membership. We strive to provide opportunities for all our members to express their interests and passions while recognizing, embracing, supporting, and defending, the distinctly American principles of government established in our Constitution. We firmly believe that the Bill of Rights is greater than any one individual.
We continue to support and appreciate the service and sacrifices of our Patriots, veterans, and active duty military. We preserve the great traditions and symbols of American freedom and liberty while understanding and appreciating the value of our American heritage and demonstrating reverent pride toward all Patriots. We continue to serve in our communities and share our knowledge with others, assisting with historical education for youth and sharing correct historical information at all times.
